Public Speaking Courses

Perth Public Speaking Courses and Training

What makes Rostrum WA’s Public Speaking training so unique, is that in each and every Rostrum WA club meeting there is a trained public speaking coach who observes the meeting and gives individuals feedback. These public speaking coaches are experienced, highly qualified speakers themselves who are also members of a Rostrum WA public speaking club. The public speaking coaches job is to observe the meeting and individuals speeches. Once the formal speeches of a meeting are finished, the public speaking coach will present their feedback to individual speakers and other club members. This is a fantastic way not only for yourself, but for everyone participating in the meeting to gain valuable feedback about how they can improve their public speaking and communication skills. Rostrum WA is the only public speaking organisation which provides this fantastic resource (actual qualified public speaking coaches) completely free to all Rostrum WA members.

Rostrum WA – Public Speaking Courses

Rostrum WA offers a 3 tiered self paced Public Speaking course for your professional development.  Most public speakers take 8-12 months to complete each module however rapid progression (6 months) through Tier 1 can be arranged as part of a fast track public speaking training course.  In addition to the structured public speaking programs there is also a short communication training courses offered by Rostrum WA called “Speak Up Speak Out” (more information below) as well as general learning workshops, public speaking workshops and mentoring available.  Each tier of the Rostrum WA Public Speaking Course is more demanding than the previous and after satisfactorily completing each one, a framable signed certificate is awarded.

Tier 1.  Personal Development Program (PDP)

This Public Speaking Course is especially designed for those new to public speaking.  It is also a great refresher for those speakers that have had some exposure and wish to polish their skills.  Progression through this public speaking course is done by completing each of the speaking exercises and obtaining expert feedback from Rostrum WA’s accredited public speaking coaches.

Tier 2.  Intermediate Development Program (IDP)

The second tier public speaking course is suitable for relatively experienced public speakers.  These public speaking and presentation exercises are more demanding than the Professional Development Program and requires sign off from a qualified public speaking coach to certify that the required standard of presentation and communication has been met.  On completion of the IDP a member can consider themselves an accomplished public speaker. This public speaking course takes 12 months to complete satisfactorily.

Tier 3.  Advanced Development Program (ADP)

This public speaking course is designed for experienced public speakers.  On completion of the ADP the speaker will be qualified to coach/mentor new speakers, write a speech for someone else, lead large meetings, achieve advanced speaking skills and to formally provide constructive feedback for all speakers.  Completion of this module must be done to the satisfaction of senior Rostrum WA members.

Frequently Asked Questions:

There is no better way to improve your interpersonal skills, become a better communicator, learn how to run meetings effectively, enhance your organisational and committee skills, improve your business presentations and gain confidence, than by joining your local Rostrum WA Public Speaking Club.

How do I actually learn public speaking?

The way to gain confidence and learn the skills of speaking to groups of people is through practice with expert feedback. In a Rostrum WA Public Speaking Club, this is done in a supportive and fun environment with a group of like minded people. Members develop their skills and gain confidence by accepting the challenge to take part in the various public speaking exercises. At the end of each meeting each person who spoke receives positive and constructive feedback from a trained public speaking tutor who is trained in the skills of analysis and evaluation. It is from this feedback that you will really hone your skills.

What happens at a Rostrum meeting?

Each meeting is chaired by a different, experienced club member. A range of speaking exercises are rostered with a notice period of around two weeks. Rostrum WA Public Speaking Clubs vary in the program they offer but they all follow a general pattern. There are usually some prepared speeches of varying durations on a set topic as well as other speaking exercises such as asking a pertinent question, reading aloud, situational speeches, moving a motion in a meeting, responding to questions, and many other exercises. Some clubs have the same exercises at each meeting and other clubs change the program weekly.

What development programs does Rostrum have?

There are three. The Personal, Intermediate and Advanced programs. When new members join they are automatically enrolled in the Personal Development Program. Although this program is self paced (as are all the programs), most people will want to be rostered into an exercise after two or three meetings. This is when improvements really happen!

Is a Speaking Club just for people learning public speaking?

No. Rostrum has some professional public speakers in its membership who use the forum to improve their skills. Most Rostrum clubs have a mix of new and experienced members from a variety of occupations. There is no one so nervous that we can not help and there is no one so experienced that Rostrum can not improve, be it for prepared speeches, impromptu speaking or chairmanship. Rostrum is also a good fun social forum and there is opportunity to mix with other clubs in Perth.

What does Rostrum cost?

Every 6 months a Term fee is payable of $75

To cover costs for room hire each club will have a different meeting fee. Some clubs also have a meal included in their meeting price. It is free however to visit any Rostrum WA Public Speaking Club if you are not a member.

Outstanding value for expert public speaking tuition.

Note the fees are correct at the time of publication (January 2016).

Rostrum is a non-profit organisation so the fees are very low compared to commercial organisations. The Rostrum WA Joining fee is $ 75. The Joining fee gets you membership, enrolment in the Personal Development Program (PDP) course and a starter kit including reference material, wallet, certificate and badge.
